Macy
Runner-Up

This was written by my eight year-old daughter:

When I was a year old, my neighbors dogs jumped into our car up on my car seat and nipped me. From that day on I was scared of dogs. Then when I was four years old, one of the people my mom helps out had a dog given to her from an out of state friend.

She had a small apartment and could not keep a dog. She called my mom the same day and asked if we could take her. When I got my dog Macy, she was very scared of people. She came from a home that abused and starved her. I had to feed Macy by taking a handful of dog food at a time and giving it to her. Macy helped me not to be scared of dogs. And she soon started trusting us. Macy is a Gordonsetter. She is black with brown on her face and feet. She is now six years old and in good health. Macy is my best friend. She follows me into the bathroom or waits outside the door. She even checks up on me at night while I sleep.

And when we are sick, she stays by our bed and is very worried. If no one is outside for me to play with, Macy will always go out to play. My dog is also a very talented. She can do many things. Macy can open the bathroom door and come in when she wants to.

In the winter, I throw snow balls and she tries to find them. Sometimes she can't find them so she takes her head and digs in the snow. In the summer I splash her with water from the swimming pool. She jumps up and tries to drink it! She just loves the water! And when we plant a garden, Macy steals and eats the tomatoes.

When it storms outside, Macy gets very scared. I then put a blanket over her head and she feels safe with me. My dog lets me play dress up with her. I think she looks funny when I put her in my clothes. But Macy loves the attention. I like doing many things with her. We lay in my bed and cuddle together. I tell her secrets, and she is a good listener when I am upset. Macy gets really excited when we get out her collar and leash. She will sit and wait at the front door. Macy knows when she is going to go on a car ride with me. She will jump in the car and sometimes we will take her to the bank with us.

There the people will give her a dog treat. When she is done with her treat she looks for more. And sometimes we stop at Burger King and get Macy a burger to eat. I think she likes the burgers we get her more than the dog treats she gets from the bank. But, I'm positive she just likes the fact that she gets a ride in the car with me the best.

Macy is also a great protector. She will bark and growl when strangers pass by or come to knock on the door. She makes me feel safe, because I know that she will not let anybody hurt me. I don't have any brothers or sisters, so I think of Macy as my sister. She is an important part of our family. With her around I am never lonely, depressed, or afraid.

That is why we are constantly saying that our Macy is the best dog in the world!!!
