Speedo
Alan and Speedo
I was living in San Francisco when I started looking for a dog. After meeting with various groups and rescue agencies, I made a trip to the SF SPCA to meet a beagle. On my way out, I made eye contact with what looked like a yellow lab. I asked about him and the volunteer proceeded to tell me a story I'll never forget. Originally found stranded in Merced, he spent time in the shelter down there and then was adopted and then abandonded again and then transferred to San Francisco. There the vets found numerous benign tumor, as well as a malignant type II mast cell tumor on his hind leg. The incredible doctors removed it and Speedo, the name given to him there, was patiently awaiting adoption. I knew from the first time I played with him in the holding cell that there was no way I was leaving without him. By far he is the happiest dog you'll ever meet. Even when he was living in a cramped apartment in SF, I've never seen him anything but happy. The Vet doctor advised me that there is a good chance that the cancer will come back, yet two years later, I am happy to report that he is healthy and as happy as ever. Every day I see him gives me such great joy to know that I was able to rescue an animal who has such unconditional love for anyone and anything he meets and unconditional joy no matter what the circumstances. I consider rescuing him one of the most important things I've done in my life so far. I hope this story brings attention to the incredible job that your local SPCA does and the type of impact that people can exert. Thanks, -ak
